2016/2017: 1.44 fppg (82GP) - Tier 1 2015/2016: 0.68 fppg (83GP) - Depth 2014/2015: 1.12 fppg (77GP) - Tier 2 2013/2014: 1.16 fppg (79GP) - Tier 2 4 year average: 1.09 fppg (321GP)
1 year @ 4,500,000
Very strong production last year, but only tier 1 season in past 4 and coming off a depth tiered season. Believe he qualifies as the type of player who can drop a salary range, especially looking at his 4 year average production.

Approved 1-1. This is fair for a very inconsistent and older player. His 2015-16 season weighs his seasons down a lot. Had two 3.25M seasons then a 0.75M season and then 5.5M. Jeff Carter had the same season as Staal last year with a much better track record (his worst year from 2013-14 to 2015-16 is better than Staal's best) and Carter got 5.25M. nhlrealgm.proboards.com/thread/324/jeff-carter-250-000-2018

I don't see the depth season as much more than an "I'm on a terrible team and about to be traded" season. It's really his only terrible season of his career. He's also only 32. He's typically good for 20+ goals and 60-70pts. Last season, on a new team, his +/- shifted from a consistent minus (-13 in his two previous years) to a solid plus (+17), and his production went back to his previous consistency. 1.12, 1.16 on a bad team, dip year, 1.44 on a good team. Will he ever return to the 100pt, 75pt avg season kind of guy? Probably not, but 65 points is nothing to sneeze at, and it definitely showed a bounce-back to his normal at the very least.
All that said, 4.5 is achingly close, and if Jeff Carter got 5.25, then it makes it hard to ask for too much more. I'll split the hairs between the two camps and say my vote comes at 1yr @ 4.75million.
2-2
