NHLREALGM OFFICIAL RULES
Section 1 - League Basics
1.1 Scoring System
This league uses the Head to Head (Points-Based) format. Fantasy teams compete against each other 1-on-1 and receive a Win, Loss or Tie each Scoring Period, depending on who has the most fantasy points. The fantasy points is determined and weighted by categories as seen below.
Standings Tie Breakers
1. Most fantasy points for entire season
2. Most wins in entire season
3. Head-to-head record vs. team(s) tied with
4. Least fantasy points against for entire season
1.2 Scoring Categories
These are the stats we use and the point totals that will be used for scoring on FanTrax.

Goals (G): 1 Points
Assists (A): 1 Point
Points (Pt): 0.25 Point
Game Winning Goals (GWG): 3 Points
Penalty Minutes (PIM): 0.25 Point
Plus/Minus (+/-): 0.25 Point
Goalies
Shutouts (SHO): 5 Points
Wins (W): 4 Points
Goals Against(GA): -1 Points

1.3 Salary Cap
The salary cap for the upcoming season will be $60 million that no GM at any time can exceed. If a GM does exceed the cap at any point, they will receive a 20% cap hit on the transaction that put them over the cap. Players that have been demoted to the minor leagues or placed on IR to create roster space still will count against the total salary cap until their contract expires or they are released or traded.
1.4 Roster Size/Starting Lineup
Each team must field a full roster at all times or be subject to disciplinary actions including cap hits and/or loss of draft picks. Each roster must contain at least 4C, 8W, 6D NHL players at all times, and no roster can exceed 23 active players at any one time. Players that have been demoted and approved by TAB as well as players on the IR do not count towards a roster spot, but they do count towards your total number of players/prospects..
Player Roster/Minors Limits
each team will be allowed a maximum of 85 players/prospects total.
- after adding our drafted and inherited players and after the end of resigns and before free agency opens each team will need to have 85 or less players/prospects. teams releasing unpaid players can make single team posts(in the "unpaid player release" thread) in which they list all those unpaid players who they are dropping and will go to the FA pool.
- teams may go over the 85 limit after our playoffs have concluded via trades and during our summer draft and resigning, but will need to get under again prior to the opening of free agency.
- From the start of free agency until the end of our playoffs, if any transaction(trade, fa signing, or waiver claim) is going to put a team over the 85 player limit they must state in that particular transaction thread which players they will be buying out and/or releasing(if unpaid) in order to remain compliant and execute those transactions asap.
Goalie Rule
We use a season total games played minimum for the goalie position. This would be actual starts that you received from your goalie slots-not your goalies' season GP.
In order to see how many starts you have go to your fantrax roster screen and at the top under "stats" select "Full Fantasy Team". Then scroll down to the goalies and you will see how many actual starts you accrued(and will include any goalie starts you had from G's who you might have traded). To see it right now before the season starts go to the 15-16 league page and take a look.
You are not required to have 2 NHL goalies-if you hit the minimum with 1 goalie- that's fine. You may not use an empty active G slot for a skater.
There would be penalties for failing to hit 35 gp---
30-34gp....1st rd pick dropped 4 slots
25-29gp....1st rd pick dropped 8 slots
20-24gp....1st rd pick dropped 16 slots
19 or less.....1st rd pick dropped 25 slots and serious discussion of replacing the GM
In addition if a team doesn't have a GM for the entire season they incur no penalty. If new GM takes over a vacant team, with 11 weeks or less in the season- no penalty incurred.
If a team that incurs a penalty has traded their 1st(including those who may be vacant), the penalty will apply to the traded pick. In the event that the offending team has traded their 1st, they will receive an equal penalty on the earliest other 1st they have that season, or if without any other 1st will receive penalty on their earliest 2nd if they have one
1.5 Injured Reserve
In the event that one of your players is placed on the IR (injured reserve) by their real life NHL team, you have the option to place them on your own IR and open up a roster space. Each team will have unlimited IR spots. You must keep track of IR players on your page, in a separate list similar to “Paid Minors.” When you put a player on IR, they are to be removed from your roster and put on this list until you remove them. They still count against the cap as all players with a contract, whether in minors or IR, count against the 60M cap.
When the player comes off real life IR, you will have 48 hours to remove the player from your IR and make the necessary roster moves to make room for him on your roster again, or demote him to the minors.
1.6 Team Pages
Each team will be required to keep 3 pages: 1 for team roster/cap info, 1 for prospects and draft picks, and 1 for team transactions for that season. You are also required to start a new roster at the start of every season in order to archive your previous rosters. THESE PAGES ARE TO BE KEPT UP TO DATE AT ALL TIMES. If your page is found to not be up to date, you will be assessed a $1,000,000 cap hit for 2 years as punishment.
- Roster page must contain all active players, all cap hits w/ year of expiry, all paid minors, total team salary and cap space.
- Prospect page must contain a list of prospects and a separate list of draft picks separated by draft year.
- Transactions pages must contain trades, free agent signings with contracts, call ups and send downs with contracts, and waiver pass/RR requests with contracts.
If you are confused, simply look at some of th eother GMs' ages Please keep this pages up to date and easy to read, if you’re going to use colors, have a key at the top of the page clearly showing what each color represents, and don’t put a dark color on the dark background of the site. Include both cap hit and term of player
1.7 Fantrax Team Pages
Your fantrax team page is just as important to maintain as your team page on the league forum. Make sure to update every transactions you make there as well.
Section 2 - Transactions
2.1 Trades
Any roster player, prospect, or draft pick that you own can be traded. When posting a trade, please include player's name, position, and any contract info [Player A, LW $1,000,000 (2011)]. If it's a prospect, all you need to do is post the player's name and position and put the word "prospect" in parenthesis after it [Player A, LW (prospect)]. If you are trading a draft pick, please include the year and round of the pick, as well as the team who the pick belongs to [2010 1st Round Pick (NYR)], or if the draft order has been determined, use the draft pick number [2010 1st Round Pick, #10 (NYR)].
Each trade must receive 3 votes from the TAB in order for it to pass. The trade will be vetoes if it receives 3 denial votes If the trade puts you over the cap it will be vetoed automatically.
2.2 Free Agency
Free Agency closes on each trade deadline date and will open each summer after the re-sign period on the on a TBD date announced as part of the offseason schedule.
The free agent list will consist of players who are not re-signed by their teams, players who were successfully bought out, undrafted prospects who were drafted by the following teams: Ottawa Senators, Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix Coyotes, Dallas Stars, Colorado Avalanche, Carolina Hurricanes, Las Vegas Knights as well as CHL, NCAA and international players who are no longer draft eligible. FREE AGENTS DO NOT NEED TO SIGN WITH A REAL LIFE TEAM IN ORDER FOR YOU TO SIGN THEM, however if you do sign them and they don't get a real life contract, you're still on the hook for their contract for the life of the contract.
If a team buys out a player, the same team cannot sign that player until he has been signed by another team and re-enters free agency.
We will have specific guidelines for free agent bidding:
First and foremost, bids CANNOT exceed 4 years in length, and each successive bid with the same term must be at least $250,000 more than the previous bid to be considered a legitimate high bid.
The way to calculate your bid will be the same as last year. You add the amount of years with the contract amount to give you your "point total."
Ex) Rangers offer 4 years @ $1 million = 5 pts
Ex) Rangers offer 2 years @ 3.25 million = 5.25 pts
We will also have a minimum bid for each player based on the amount of years of NHL experience they have. A full NHL season is defined as 25+ games in a season. This amount of years is from the beginning of the player's career, and not the beginning of this league. The minimum bids are as follows:
0 years: $250,000
1 year: $300,000
2-3 years: $450,000
4-6 years: $500,000
7-9 years: $625,000
10+ years: $750,000
a winning bid is achieved by having the highest offer for 24 hours
1 year offer rule:
if you sign a player in free agency to a 1 year deal, if/when u attempt to resign them you will need to offer 80% per year of that 1yr total. If you trade that player, the team who acquires will be subject to the same rules
2.3 Re-Signs
Any player who's contract expires at the end of the current season can be re-signed. This includes unpaid prospects who lose their call up eligibility (2.5). Resign amounts are based on the resign rubric which is described below. You have 3 chances to make an offer and TABs vote on each offer- An offer will be approved if 3 TABs approve. The offer will be denied if 3 TABs vote against the offer. if you are unable to "reach an agreement" with the player, he becomes a free agent and you will be unable to bid on him in free agency.
1 year offer rule:
if you sign a player in free agency to a 1 year deal, if/when u attempt to resign them you will need to offer 80% per year of that 1yr total regardless of their performance. If you trade that player, the team who acquires will be subject to the same rules.
league minimums based on experience(seasons of 25 or more nhl gp):
0 years: $250,000
1 year: $300,000
2-3 years: $450,000
4-6 years: $500,000
7-9 years: $625,000
10+ years: $750,000
Section A: Player with 41+ NHL games played this season
2. Using the following template and fill relevant information for last 4 years.
NOTE: You only need to find the fpts/game and number of games played in that relevant season
<Insert Player Name>
2016/2017: # fpts/game (# games)
2015/2016: # fpts/game (# games)
2014/2015: # fpts/game (# games)
2013/2014: # fpts/game (# games)
3. Classify the tier each of the 4 seasons by using the guide below.
Tier Guide (Full NHL Season = 41+ games)
DEPTH: under 0.8 fpts/game
Tier 3: 0.8 to 0.95 fpts/game
Tier 2: 0.95 to 1.2 fpts/game
Tier 1: 1.2 to 1.55 fpts/game
ELITE: over 1.55 fpts/game
4. Identify if player falls under Bridge Contract Rule
Bridge Contract Rule: 2 year max contract term
Players who fall into one or more of the following criteria are subject to the Bridge Contract Rule.
a) 2 or less full NHL seasons (41+ games) played in last 4 NHL seasons
b) Less than 40 games played in most recent season
c) Production tier in most recent season has not been replicated in players recent seasons.
d) Production tier in 2 or more previous full seasons are higher than production tier in most recent season
5. Based on fpts/game from current season, offer a salary within the range
NOTE: If the player has 2+ full seasons where he was in a higher TIER production, the salary range MUST be one step higher. If the player has 2+ full seasons where he had lower TIER production, the salary range MAY be one step lower.

Defenseman
Section B: Player has 40 or less games played this season
2. Using the following template and fill relevant information for last 2 years.
NOTE: for Weighted Average add the 2 seasons' total fpts together and divide by the combined total games
<Insert Player Name>
2016/2017: total fpts/ total # games
2015/2016: total fpts/ total # games
Weighted Average fpts/game: combined total fpts / combined total games
3. Depending on your players total number of games in last 2 seasons, offer a bridge contract (max 1-2 year term)
a) If your player has less than 80 total games in last 2 seasons, offer a bridge contract with a contract valuation that you feel best represents the player
b) If your player has 80 or more total games in last 2 seasons, offer a bridge contract within the range based on weighted average fpts/game from most recent 2 seasons:
Forward
Defenseman
Goalie Rubric
Tier Total Fpts Salary Min Salary Max Notes
8 240+ $8,500,000 No Max
7 225-240 $8,000,000 $8,500,000
6 200-225 $7,500,000 $8,000,000
5 175-200 $7,000,000 $7,500,000
4 150-175 $5,000,000 $7,000,000
3 100-150 $2,500,000 $5,000,000
2 50-100 $1,500,000 $2,500,000 Max 2-year contract
1 10-50 $1,000,000 $1,500,000 Max 2-year contract
0 0-10 $250,000 $1,500,000 Max 2 year contract
2.4 Call-Ups
Any prospect who is called up with less than 25 career NHL regular season games played will receive a contract of $250,000 for 4 seasons. If the player has 25+ NHL games in one or more regular seasons, we will use the the experience chart to determine their contract.
0 years: $250,000
1 year: $300,000
2-3 years: $450,000
4-6 years: $500,000
7-9 years: $625,000
10+ years: $750,000
If the player has less than 25 career NHL regular season games, the 4 year term starts from the season the unpaid prospect is called up on. If the unpaid prospect has 25 and over career games played, the 4 year term will start from the season the player hit the 25 career game mark.
You must get TAB approval, which will be posted in your call-up thread, before you add the player to your roster, either RealGM or Fantrax. This is to confirm that your roster and salary are both compliant and have room for the player you're looking to call-up.
Ex) Player reached 25 career games in 10/11 but is called up in 13/14 - his 4 year entry level contract will start from 10/11 despite being called up in 13/14 and finish at the end of that 2013/2014 season.
Ex) Player had 24 career games by the time he was called up in 13/14 - his 4 year entry level contract will start from 13/14 and end 4 years from it at the end of the 2016/2017 season.
2.5 Prospect Eligibility Limit
Once 4 seasons pass from a unpaid prospect reaching 25 career games, he will lose call-up eligibility and become re-sign eligible as if he's an UFA to be.
Ex) Radulov reached 25 career games in 06/07. Therefore, the term of his 4 year ELC would start from that year and last 4 years:
06/07
07/08
08/09
09/10
Regardless of where Radulov was called up or not, he will be up for re-sign in 2010. This will be the case for every unpaid player in the future. If not re-signed, they will be released into UFA as you would any player you don't re-sign.
2.6 Send Downs
There are two ways to send a player down without using waivers:
1) Waiver Pass - Each team will get 1 waiver pass per season and will reset back to 1 at the start of the regular season regardless if your use it or not. The cycle is from period 1 of the current season to period 1 of the following season - full season + the offseason. This is used for players with 50 and over NHL games played and that the player does not have to pass through waivers and gets sent directly to the minor leagues. Once you use your 1 waiver pass, all future players that are sent down for the rest of the season must go through waivers or be eligible to use the Rookie Rule.
simply make a post in the waiver pass thread with the player's name in the tile of the thread and in the body list his contract details (ex: 250,000 2019)
2) Rookie Rule - This means the player has less than 50 total career NHL games and can be sent down without passing through waivers and without using a waiver pass.
simply make a post in the "Rookie Demotions" thread with the players name in the title, and in the body list his salary (ex: 250,000 2019) and how many career gp he has played
Any player that you send to the minor still counts towards your salary cap for the life of his contract and must be reflected on your roster page as "Paid Minors."
2.7 Waiver Demotion and Buyouts
Waiver Order
The waiver order will now be the reverse of the previous year's regular season standings( this will take effect the day after the end of our regular season)Teams that make a claim go to the bottom of the list. Following the off-season, after the first 4 scoring periods of our regular season we will switch to that current season's live standings to determine our waiver order(tie breaker is least total fpts for). There is no rotation of waiver order between the 5th week of the season and the end of our regular season.
Placing a player on waivers:
You can also place a player on waivers, but he can be claimed by any other team who is cap and roster space compliant within 24 hours.
If the player is not claimed, there are two options you have:
1) Send to Minors - Send the player to the minors, and absorb the contract to open up a roster spot.
2) Buyouts - Release the player with a 40% cap hit for the life of his contract. Please specify in your initial post whether you'd like him to be released or sent to the minors if he clears waivers and post the player's contract info as well. The TAB will determine the cap hit, please do not calculate it yourself. It will be posted upon the player clearing waivers and that being confirmed by the TAB.
Players that are bought out by a team cannot be signed as UFA by same team.
Ex) Rangers place Player A $1,000,000 (201x) on waivers with the intent to release.
Ex) Rangers place Player A $1,000,000 (201x) on waivers with the intent to demote to my minors if he clears.
If a team wishes to buyout a player in the minors or place a minors player on waivers they do not have to create a call-up thread. they can simply make a waivers thread with complete salary info and potential buyout caphit. saving some procedural annoyance.
Waiver Reclaim Rule:
If a team waives a player and another team claims, and the new team waives the same player within 30 days of the original team waiving, then the original team can "reclaim" the player and send him straight to the minors without losing any place in the waiver order. If another team places a claim then the team with the highest place in the waiver order will win the player and they will go onto their roster, as per normal procedure.
2.8 Cap Retention
This is the act of a team keeping salary on a player they are trading.
A new section will be added under buyouts on every teams rosters, named Salary Retained. This will list the players that are no longer on the team but have retained salary in a deal. If salary is retained, it must be retained for ALL remaining years of a contract just like a buyout. This cap hit cannot be traded and MUST remain on the cap for all years just like a buyout
Salary up to 50% can be retained on a player by a team. The salary cannot go lower than the contract minimum for the player. For example, a player making 500,000(201X) with 4-6 season experience cannot have any salary retained as that player is already making the minimum. For all the minimum salary figures see Section 2.2. Trades that are posted that break this rule will be automatically voided.
Each team can only have maximum 2 salaries retained at any time and cannot retain salary again until at least one of the contracts expire. Trades that are posted that break this rule will be automatically voided.
Teams cannot trade for players that they are actively retaining salary on. This is similar to the buyout rule where you cannot sign a player you bought out. Trades that are posted that break this rule will be automatically voided.
A player can only have cap retained actively once at a time. If you have a player with cap retained, he cannot have cap retained on him until the current cap retention expires. Trades that are posted that break this rule will be automatically voided.
A "Cap Retention Tracking Thread" will be made available for teams to have a full summary of players that have their salaries retained.
Ex)
To Team A:
C John Doe 3,000,000 (201X)
To Team B:
1st round pick 201X
Salary Retained - John Doe 2,000,000 (201X)
Team A will add John Doe to their team like any player they would acquire in a trade, no difference.
Team B will add the 1st round pick to their draft page, add John Doe 2,000,000(201X) under the salary retained heading on their roster page. That cap hit will be included in salary cap calculations just as one would for cap hits under the buyout headin
Draft
3.1 Draft Basics
The draft will consist of 4 rounds with the same order for each round, and each team will have 14 hours to make their pick. If your pick is skipped, the next person will be allowed to make their pick, and so on down the line. You will still be allowed to make your pick, but it will only be from the remaining players available. At the end of each round, missed picks for active GM's will be assigned according to highest available NHL draftee remaining. If a team doesn't have a GM we will auto-select the highest remaining forward at the time of their pick.
3.2 Draft Date
Each season, we will hold an entry draft like the NHL starting around on July 1st. exact date TBD
3.3 Draft Order Determination
The order will be determined by the preceding season's league standings. The 8 non-playoffs will get the top 8 picks with the last place team getting 1st overall. The rest of the order will be reliant on the playoff results - exactly like the 6 division NHL format. The final 4 teams in the playoffs will end up with the final 4 picks in the draft (champion gets 24th, runner-up 23rd, best record 22nd, remaining team 21st). Division winners who didn't make final four will be the next set of picks starting from the 20th with worst record getting higher pick. The remaining picks will go to the eliminated non division winners in order of worst at 9th overall to best record. Order is subject to being changed if deemed to be obtained in an unethical manner - see Section 4.
To determine who gets the higher pick in the event of a tie.
Standings Tie Breakers
1. Least fantasy points for entire season
2. Least wins in entire season
3. Head-to-head record vs. team(s) tied with (Loser)
4. Most fantasy points against for entire season
3.4 Draft Eligible Players
Will only consist of players who are draft eligible and drafted in that season's NHL draft ONLY.
3.5 Undrafted Players Assignment
Players that were not selected in the NHLREALGM draft but were selected in that years NHL draft will be awarded to those teams that took them in real life.
Ex) John Doe was taken 7th round by the Montreal Canadiens in the NHL but wasn't selected by any team in NHLREALGM's draft. The Montreal Canadiens in the NHLREALGM will be awarded John Doe.
3.6 Undrafted Players that become UFA
Players who were not taken in the NHLREALGM draft that were drafted by the Ottawa Senators, Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix Coyotes, Dallas Stars, Colorado Avalanche, Carolina Hurricanes, Las Vegas in the NHL draft don't have a team here to award players to due to contraction. These will become UFAs and can be signed when UFA opens.
3.7 Draft Picks Available for Trade
Only draft picks for the current and following seasons can be traded.
Section 4 - Tanking/Unethical Conduct Rules
4.1 Anti-Tanking
If a team is not fielding full/best lineup at all times on purpose to obtain a higher pick (ie. leaving injured players in over healthy players, benching star players for plugs, purposely having invalid roster, benching to avoid games so that no one collects points, having less than the minimum required number of players, etc) they are subject to penalties including cap hits and/or loss of draft picks.
4.2 Miscellaneous
Abusing the system through loopholes/cheating on the forum or on fantrax to get an advantage is subject to disciplinary action up to and including cap hit, loss of draft pick(s) OR removal from league.
4.3 Respect Among Peers
This is meant to be a fun environment where everyone feels welcome. As such, everyone is expected to be respectful to your fellow GM. Disagreements should not be dealt with with insults and other petty means publicly or via PMs. Zero tolerance will be given for those continuously disturbing the peace. If there is such a situation, PM the TAB and it will be dealt with.
